Sad Rafer

The Orlando Magic: In the second round, they defeated the defending NBA champions (minus their best player). In the Eastern Conference Finals, they overcame the MVP and the so-called best team in the league (who, unfortunately for the people of Cleveland, were "coached" by Mike Brown and his pickup league offense). Thus the Magicians made it to the Finals...where they gave us this:

Oddly enough, this series -- which the Lakers won 4-1 -- could have gone the full seven games...if Orlando hadn't choked away Games 2 and 4. And last night's lackluster effort sure made it seem like that Game 4 heartbreaker killed Orlando's team spirit. The Magic put up a decent fight for all of 12 minutes, then died a quiet, whimpering death the rest of the way. During the second and third quarters, the Gargamels scored only 33 points (13-for-39) and committed 10 turnovers. The final period was a formality.

Orlando shot 41 percent for the game. They missed 19 of their 27 three-point attempts. They were battered on the boards 47-36 (including 13-6 on the offensive glass). Dwight Howard had a good game...for Jamaal Magloire (11 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocked shots, 3 turnovers, 5 fouls). Hedo Turkoglu (12 points, 4-for-8, 5 fouls) spent his 42 minutes of PT locked in a Trevor Ariza-shaped straightjacket. Rashard Lewis (6-for-19 from the field, 3-for-12 from downtown) re-opened the debateon whether he was really worth that $118 million contract he signed back in 2007. The starting backcourt of Rafer Alston and Courtney Lee (10-for-25, 1-for-8 from behind the arc) were firing blanks. Mickael Pietrus (4 points and 1 rebound in 14 minutes) and Jameer Nelson (5 points and 4 assists in 12 minutes) were non-factors. Freaking J.J. Redick (8 points, 3-for-3 from the field, 2-for-2 on threes, and 3 assists in 10 minutes off the bench) might have been Orlando's best player.

Nobody expected the Magic to win, of course. Not after they failed to come through in either of those overtime losses. But I would have figured they'd fight tooth and nail to avoid the embarrassment of giving up the title on their home court. So, once again, I figured wrong. Play them off, Keyboard Cat...

Stan Van Gundy: After that tough loss/choke job in Game 4, Stan said: "The guys are in a good frame of mind. We are not mentally weak. We are ready to play and I think we will play a hell of a game." Then he tried to inspire his players with a story about American cyclist Greg LeMond's come-from-behind win in the 1989 Tour de France. "People started to write him off. And at the end of a stage he looked beaten and he and his wife were talking and when he left and they asked his wife what he said and he said to her, 'I'll just make the story all that much better when I come back and win it.'" Then he preached belief. "You've got to start first with the belief you can win the championship. If you don't think you can go to Los Angeles and win the championship then even though you're saying one game at a time it is pretty easy to let go if things aren't going well. I tell them it is no different than the approach we've had all year. Our goal from the beginning has been to win the championship but then you approach your job one day, one game, one possession at a time."

Well, that worked. I bet he lives in a van down by the river, too.

Kobe Bryant, quote machine: On finally winning a title without Shaq: "I just don't have to hear that criticism, that idiotic criticism anymore. That's the biggest thing. I don't have to hear that stuff anymore. It was annoying. It was like Chinese water torture, just keep dropping a drop of water on your temple. It was just annoying. I would cringe every time. I was just like, it's a challenge I'm just going to have to accept because there's no way I'm going to argue it. You can say it until you're blue in the face and rationalize it until you're blue in the face, but it's not going anywhere until you do something about it. I think we as a team answered the call because they understood the challenge that I had, and we all embraced it."

Shaq: Anybody else notice Shaq's congratulatory Tweet to Kobe last night? Dan B. did:

Shaq twitter

On the one hand, it's pretty damn funny. But on the other hand, it's also classic Shaq: Even when it's not about him, it's all about him. To him, anyway. The Big Me-Me-Me also took time away from his busy schedule -- which currently includes trying to force a trade to the Crabs -- to mock both Adam Morrison and Sun Yue.

The Machine: This entry actually doubles as Chris's last lacktion report of the year: "Sasha Vujacic celebrated the Lakers' fourth championship this decade with a one-brick +1 suck differential in 4:42, the last lacktator of the 2009 postseason!" Speaking of Sasha...

The world we live in: We already lived in a world where Antoine Walker is an NBA champion. And now...

Lakers fans: Great Caesar's ghost. Will the Lakers ever be able to win a championship without the people of Los Angeles acting like they've been infected with the "Rage virus" from 28 Days Later? How is Steve Kerr still employed? The guy blew up a title contender just so he could bring in Shaq, and now a little over a year later he appears ready to essentially bury the Suns just so he can unload Shaq for a retiring Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic? I guess at this point I don't really know what the Suns can do to improve, but honestly, who didn't see this mess coming when Kerr made the trade for Shaq? I bet Pat Riley hasn't stopped smiling once since that trade went through. By revisiting the Shaq to the Crabs trade, I think it basically means that the firesale will be on in Phoenix. Don't be surprised if Nash and Amare are in different uniforms by March.

Here's hoping Sun Yue can build on all he accomplished this year, and actually get some more playing time next year. That way we can hopefully see he and Jamario Moon on the floor at the same time, opening the door for a possible Sun - Moon jersey side by side photo op.

Buck Nasty -- Speechless? YOU?! I should have thrown in a couple typos.

Yams -- That Shaq trade should go down as one of the worst ever. It won't because of O'Neal's mini-renaissance (statistically) last season. But it should, because it destroyed the team's chemistry and initiated an organizational shift towards "Spurs ball"...a shift that failed so miserably that the Suns had to undergo an organizational shift back to 7 Seconds or Less mid-season. Phoenix is a rudderless ship right now, and all management wants to do right now is cut costs. Winning isn't even part of the equation right now.

I agree with most of your analysis, but I wouldn't say the Shaq-Marion trade "destroyed" the Suns' chemistry. Marion was already disgruntled, and I don't think the Nash-Amare-Marion chemistry was very good beneath the surface. Not that the Nash-Amare-Shaq chemistry is any better.

But I think the real bad decision was getting Terry Porter. He just couldn't do the job.

But also, it's easy to criticize all of these decisions ex post facto. The Suns were a team who already knew they could get deep in the playoffs. So they're looking for a combination of moves that gets them over the top. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, but languishing at one place, even if it's because of David Stern, isn't very acceptable to fans or the media. And when it doesn't work, yep, you get to make fun of them here.

Then again, 2007 seemed even less epic, at least we have chokejobs to talk about this time around. But the lack of drama in this series manifested itself best in the general absence of non-contributors, particuarly the meltdown Tony Battie had in throwing away his chances for the Damon Jones Award by showing up mildly in the Finals. Grr!

Blogger Wild Yams said...
Karc, if there is some conspiracy that gifted the Lakers the title this year (as you seem to imply), then you'd have to say the Magic were in on it. The way they played in Games 1 and 5 left little room to wonder if anyone other than the Lakers and Magic were deciding who would win those games; and even though it seemed like the refs did everything they could to give Game 4 to the Magic, they did everything they could to choke it away. Is there really any game in this series you could point to and say it looked suspiciously like the refs were blatantly calling things in the Lakers' favor? No. So like I said, if there's a conspiracy, it has to begin and end with the Magic organization and their players.

And so if this is a part of a bigger conspiracy, to always have the team from the conference ESPN covered win it all, does that mean the Lakers were in on it last year in stepping aside so the Celtics could win for the good of the league or something? Maybe that explains why they blew a 24 point lead in Game 4 and got drilled by 39 in Game 6. Hmmm... now it all makes sense...

I guess Andrew Bynum IS the center of the future... and always will be.

Ariza was what put them over the top this year, IMO. He's the biggest difference from last year's team- if you give his minutes to Walton or make Odom start, this team might not have had enough to beat Denver or Houston. Ariza was clutch and played great defense all playoffs long. Gave them a great finisher and lanky versatile disruptor on D. Way to go, Ryu Ariza! Tatsumaki-senpuu-kyaku!!!!

Blogger Wild Yams said...
Regarding Bynum, I'll say this: I think it's a mistake to write him off the way so many have. Remember that the guy is still only 21, and he was in fact coming back right at the playoffs after missing so much time with that injury. But the injury didn't look like it limited him at all, he just looked like he never really got back into the flow of things, and was just kinda... off all playoffs. But after a full summer of training on what should be a fully healed knee, who's to say what he could look like in the fall? The guy was impressive in flashes, and was beginning to look downright scary before he got hurt in January. He was less than impressive these last two months, but it's way, way too early to be kicking dirt on his grave. Just my opinion.

The final straw for me was Mark Jackson's final fellating of Kobe as the game drew to its pathetic close, essentially implying that now Kobe is the greatest player of all time-- classic Van Gundy response as well: "Now you can legitimately have a conversation about that", the implication being that His Airness might now have to move over and share his sacred throne...

WY-

Not kicking dirt on his grave- just making the point that everybody who thought Bynum was going to be the difference in the playoffs this year was wrong. He supplied some decent minutes, but was FAR from "difference-maker" territory. Ariza was the guy who was totally absent last year and made significant contributions (including basically winning game 4 for LA when he scored 9 straight to get LA the lead going into the 4th).

Yeah, Bynum is young, and could still do something (same could be said for Oden). But the second coming of Shaq O'Neil, he ain't. He might be the second coming of Jermaine O'Neil... But to have knee problems like he does at such an early age does not bode well for the future.

Blogger Cortez said...
"The guy was impressive in flashes..."

Unless he is a nut case or a goof, which he may very well be, Bynum is going to be a very solid player, if not great, in the years to come.

His offensive game is already light years ahead of Dwight "I hit 'em in practice!" Howard.

Agreed, BUT Pao was THERE last year... Ariza and Bynum were both out (and so was Odom, really, with his bum shoulder/knee/confidence/whateverelesyouwannaname), ergo the "difference-maker" tag. I'm comparing last year's Lakers team to this year's.

Pau is far and away the best player on the Lakers outside of Kobe imnsho, and is really one of a small handful of players remaining in the NBA with REAL POST MOVES (gasp!).

I still find it hard that that moron won COY. This beats Sam Mitchell and Mike Dunleavy, making Mike Brown easily the dumbest coach to win COY in my lifetime.

Honestly, I cant believe some people took this long to realize he's a moron. What's even more frightening is that the majority of the basketball world still hasn't caught on that Mike Brown blows as a coach. The evidence is plain as day. Those dumbfounded grins that Mike sported on the sideline while his Cav's were getting served by the Magic were the exact same ones he rocked while San Antonio dismembered them in the finals. In fact, watch any Cav's footage from any loss they suffer... Mike just stands there on the sideline with a smirk that is usually donned on the visage of a befuddled retard.

Blogger chris said...
DDC: 67 misses in five. To put that into context, when I went to Clippers-Kings at Arco in February, there were 96 misses from all players combined in that one game.

Blogger Wild Yams said...
AK Dave - You're very right that Bynum wasn't the "difference maker" this year, but I think part of that was Bynum's injury again, and part of it was who the Lakers matched up against. Most Laker fans will tell you though that they thought Ariza could have been a difference maker last year as well. Boston had Pierce, Allen and Posey to put on Kobe and the Lakers had... Luke Walton and Vlad Radmanovic to put on Pierce (Kobe was busy with Ray Ray). Ariza could have been real key in that series.

But a reason people thought Bynum could be a big difference maker against the Celtics was because putting him in there would have moved Gasol to match up with KG, rather than Odom having that duty, while it would have had Bynum and Perkins guarding each other. Last year Perkins was able to use his strength to muscle Gasol while KG just owned Odom (while floating around to wreak general havoc defensively). Having Bynum & Gasol in the game would have meant that KG would have to stay put on Gasol, and Perkins wouldn't have been able to do as much help shotblocking. Anyway, that's how the thinking went.

Nevertheless, don't underestimate the role Bynum played in The Finals. Look at the foul trouble Odom had, and imagine how different things would have been if Odom and Gasol didn't have Bynum to help absorb the fouls that he did. But Bynum was different than, say, DJ Mbenga, in that when he was in there, Howard actually had to guard him; and Bynum actually had a chance of defending Dwight. He wasn't just a warm body who represented 6 fouls.

Finally, I think it's wrong to say that Bynum has shown a proclivity for knee problems, per say. He's injured each knee, but the one this year was the result of having Kobe slam into it at full speed. IMO that's something which would very likely incapacitate most people. But Bynum hasn't shown weird structural issues or anything like that, he's just had someone smash into his knee, or in the case of last season, he came down on someone's foot wrong. Time will tell with him, but Cortez is right: he's already got a far, far more polished offensive post game than Dwight Howard probably ever will. For all the people here who are saying Gasol is one of the few guys left who actually has post moves (which is true), I'd say that Bynum is another guy you could say that about. You may not have seen it much in the playoffs, and I don't know how many early regular season Laker games most people here watched, but believe me that the guy definitely has a lot of pretty effective post moves. Combined with his height and length, the potential is definitely there. IMO the numbers he was putting up in January were not a fluke.

I've always been more of a phil fan than a Kobe fan, and I wanted this for phil. I've watched Phil since the bulls and all through the Kobe/Shaq years. Sasha Vujacic was terrific during these finals, he was so good that the Lakers won without him scoring a SINGLE point!

Im with you on Sasha. I can't stand him and he totally didn't help at all during the finals. But I'd say give Adam a break. He didn't ask to be traded to the Lakers so he just sat on the bench cuz you're only allowed 12 roster guys. Don't all champion teams have 3rd string guys who hardly play? Since when are all 3rd stringers supposed to average over 10 minutes? I'm kind of glad he didn't celebrate like crazy cuz he knew (as Sasha didn't) that he didn't help in these finals and he's got (more like had) the talent to win big games (gonzaga, except when he cried).

Celts last year had tony allen and cassell, spurs in 07 had matt bonner and Jacque Vaughn, miamie before that had shandon anderson and wayne simien (and antoine walker on sasha's status)

my point is how can someone belittle a player for winning a ring when they hardly play BECAUSE they are a third stringer or dont even suit up. again, this post is in defense of ADAM MORRISON.

I hope he can do well and be a part of the lakers rotation in the coming years.

In Adam Morrison's offense, being a New Zealander, I loved watching the Spurs win the championship and Sean Marks was loving every moment of it, even though he didn't get off the bench. Coming to think of it, he didn't even get out of street clothes, and yet, he was a total professional. The guy Tim Duncan once called his favourite teammate. I mean, isn't that end of the bench guy supposed to be the one starting the "defense" chants, being the first to high five the players at the start of timeouts, and make the 5-10 minute bench players feel good about themselves? I mean, seriously, let's not waste our pity on a self-pitying Adam Morrison. He has the best job in the world (apart from being Kobe's teammate, of course). I never thought someone could be so gloomy after being traded from one of the league's worst teams to the best team...
