Kevin Garnett Photobomb!

Speaking of Kevin Garnett, AnacondaHL shared an amazing Garnett quote earlier today:
"Shaq is paradise," said Garnett. "You ever wash your sheets and then set them out to dry in the sun? You ever smell those sheets when they're done? That's what Shaq is."
I... don't even know what to say. And since I'm still recovering from a turkey-induced food coma, let's just move on.

Hey, uh, LeBron, I think you got a little something in your teeth there... Wait, you mean you got a mouthpiece like that on purpose??

Nationally Televised Friday Games:
Rockets at Bobcraps, ESPN2, 7pm: What's going on? TNT gives us two just horrible Thanksgiving night games, and ESPN (well, ESPN2 actually) has to try to match them?

Warriors at Grizzlies, ESPN2, 9:30pm: Okay, now they're just messing with us.

All The Other Friday Games:
Cavaliers at Magic, 7pm: It's kind of funny now to think about how this used to be a real rivalry, isn't it?

Craptors at Celtics, 7:30pm: Instead of watching these dinosaurs and their unbelievable four game winning streak, you should instead prepare yourself to watch Triassic Attack Saturday night on the SyFy channel. Go and read this article for more information (come on, do it. It quotes Frank Coniff, AKA "TV's Frank" from Mystery Science Theater 3000!). The basic premise of the movie:
The movie is about the fossilized remains of dinosaurs that are brought back to life by a Native American spell and urged to wreak havoc on a small town. The ravenous, animated skeletons start eating as many people as they can.

However, because the resurrected dinosaurs are only bones, they have no digestive organs. So their human meals just drop to the ground after mastication.
Tell me that isn't 65 million times more awesome than a Craptors game.

Bucks at Pistons, 7:30pm: The now largely-unfeared deer from Wisconsin are sitting at a 5-9 record despite a solid defense because, as I've noted before, you still have to score more points than the other guy. Luckily for them, Detroit is also a five win team with a much less effective defense.

76ers at Heat, 7:30pm: And sadly the run of epic Heat failures comes to an end.

Thunder at Pacers, 8pm: The Thunder are 5-1 this year on the road, but going back a ways, they have lost 3 straight games in Indianapolis. I'm trying to figure this one out, but I'm just plain not smart enough to comprehend that. It's just the Pacers, guys. Get it together.

Mavericks at Spurs, 8:30pm: Interesting game. The Mavs are winning games, but not in a good way. Quoting Marc Stein on The BS Report: "The problem is if [Nowitzki] has to keep carrying the load he's carrying right now, we won't see him in April. He's playing spectacular, but this team is -- hard to watch right now is putting it kindly. They're winning games with [defense]... If Jason Terry has an off-night, they're huge trouble because half the time they're playing 2-on-5 offensively." The Spurs may have barely beaten the Timberpups in a goofy trap game, but they could really bring it to the Mavs here.

Bulls at Nuggets, 9pm: The Bulls need to win either this game or Saturday night at Suckramento to lock up their first winning record for the Circus Trip since Jordan was dunking all over people for them. Unfortunately, Derrick Rose and Taj Gibson are both gametime decisions tonight. Gibson's ankle is still a little sore, and Rose is fighting discomfort in his neck.

Clippers at Suns, 9pm: Now that the Clippers have gotten their one win for the week out of the way, they can go back to their usual godawful routine of failure.

Lakers at Jazz, 9:30pm: Sobering stat of the day: "The Utah Jazz have lost all three home games against teams that made the playoffs last season." And if you'll remember, the Lakers beat the holy hell out of the Jazz in the playoffs last year, and are on the warpath this year and intent on destroying everything in their sight. Sorry, Utah fans. Not looking good for tonight.

Hornets at Frail Blazers, 10pm: The Blazers were looking forward to getting Joel Przybilla back on the court (as were the rest of us here at Basketbawful), but it may not happen tonight. After recovering for nearly a full year from a ruptured patella, he finally gets ready to hit the court... and has to go to the hospital fighting a stomch virus. It's almost like somebody on the inside is sabotaging the Blazers at this point. (For the record, The Vanilla Gorilla is still a gametime decision, and will play limited minutes if he does get in the game)

Nationally Televised Saturday Games:
Magic at Wizards Generals, NBA TV, 7pm: "Magic" and "wizards" battle it out in the matchup of geektacular team names!

All The Other Saturday Games:
Hawks at Knicks, 1pm: I have nothing worth sharing related to this game, so I'll just share this: President Obama needed 12 stitches after getting hit in the mouth during a friendly game of hoops on Thanksgiving. At least it's better than what happened to Tiger Woods the last time we had a celebrity of sorts get injured over the Thanksgiving long weekend.

Grizzlies at Cavaliers, 7:30pm: Fair to say almost nobody will be at this game, right? The Cleveland fans have to save up their dollars for the King James return game.

Nyets at 76ers, 7:30pm: Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted: "Terrence Williams had a lot of red flags for teams coming out of Louisville and chronic tardiness with Nets earns him demotion to D-League." As someone from Louisville who watched T-Will in college far too much... yes, he is D-League material.

Warriors at Timberwolves, 8pm: Are you ready for Darko to put up a 30/15/5 game? It's within the realm of possibility here, folks. Somebody please hold me. I'm scared.

Heat at Mavericks, 8:30pm: There will be a combination of five effective offensive players on the floor at once here. Too bad it's spread over two teams.

Bobcraps at Bucks, 9pm: The appeal of watching this game is like watching The Postman to see Tom Petty's cameo as himself in a post-apocalyptic Kevin Costner world. Terrible enough to be briefly amusing, but absolutely not worth it, and you feel like a worse person for seeing it. (However, it is worth it to check out the Youtube comments for the joke someone makes about living "like a refugee")

Bulls at Kings, 10pm: This reeks of trap game. Chicago looking forward to ending their road trip, Rose is a little banged up, Suckramento should in theory be an easy opponent...

* * *

All The Sunday Games:
Hawks at Craptors, 1pm: As bad as the Hawks have struggled at times this season, at least they can take comfort in knowing they haven't lost twice in a week to the Craptors like the 76ers recently did. So that's nice.

Knicks at Pistons, 1:30pm: Including this game, the Knicks upcoming schedule: at Pistons, Nyets, at Hornets, at Craptors, T-Wolves, Craptors, at Generals. Seriously, I am willing to accept that the Knicks might reel off several wins in a few weeks here.

Spurs at Hornets, 3pm: Good game.

Jazz at Clippers, 3:30pm: Not so good of a game.

Thunder at Rockets, 7pm: At what point does Daryl Morey start drinking heavily?

Frail Blazers at Nyets, 7pm: Just thinking here... aren't we overdue for The Prokhorov to do something ridiculous and entertaining? I feel kinda let down.

Suns at Nuggets, 8pm: Newsflash: Amar''''e is a terrible defender. (I know, mindblowing news, right?) Well, here is some insight into that -- Amar'''e says nobody ever taught him how to play defense! Because of course it's impossible for him to seek other sources of knowledge...

Pacers at Lakers, 9:30pm: While the Lakers certainly will just steamroll over the Pacers in this game, they still won't be too upset if they do manage to somehow lose. They're the only team in the entire Pacific division that is above .500 as of Friday. Not that this is surprising since they play in the same conference as the Warriors, Kings, and Clippers, but still.

Kobe going hero mode = Lakers lose. So despite that great offense that only put up 96 points against a team they were supposed to beat the "holy hell" out of, they now have lost to Denver, Phoenix, and Utah (i.e. legit/semi-legit playoff teams). Just sayin'.

Blogger Dan B. said...
Jesus. You would think at some point the Jazz would stop being able to come back from being down any margin at any time against any team and managing to win. But they keep doing it. Unreal.

Blogger Unknown said...
Actually Kobe going "hero mode" had nothing to do with it. It was everybody else like Barnes, Fisher, Blake, and Brown bricking ill-advised three after ill-advised three and the whole team going cold after the first quarter.

Kobe making all those baskets kept it to a one possession game until the shot clock malfunctions made a joke of the final two minutes.

TRACY MCGRADY got on the lacktion ledger tonight with a +1, as did Kwame Brown with a +4.

This has officially become one of the greatest seasons for bawful EVER.

Blogger LotharBot said...
This week has been one of the greatest anti-clutch free throw weeks ever. Bawful could run a "bricked free throws" feature and have plenty of material. I know of five games where bricked FT with under 2 minutes left changed the complexion of the game, and the bricking team went on to lose all five.

We had Trevor Ariza for the Hornets against the Clippers on Monday, down 2 with 21 seconds left and clanking both ft.

Then there was Evan Turner for Philly on Tuesday, with a 3 point lead and 8 seconds left against the Wiz, bricking both FT, which left the game close enough for John Wall to send it to OT.

On Wednesday, Jason Richardson hit 1 of 2 with 5 seconds left in the first OT, leaving his Suns with only a 2 point lead. This allowed Derrick Rose to send it to 2OT (with an easy 2 rather than a difficult 3), where the Bulls ran away with it.

Today is Friday, and John Lucas III got 2 FT with 12 seconds left and a 1 point lead against the Nuggets. He bricked both. Then Melo missed a potential go-ahead bucket with 4 seconds left, but 3 Bulls combined to lose the rebound out of bounds, which let Melo hit the game winner at the buzzer.

Also today, Darren Collison and Brandon Rush each bricked a FT with under 2 minutes to go in OT, in a game that was tied at 102 with the Thunder. Those 2 points would've been nice to have when it was 106-103 and the Pacers had possession with under 24 seconds left. A one point game with a chance to win at the buzzer is very different from a 3 point game where you're taking a tough shot just to tie, and a miss and ft at the other end leave you down 5.

Somebody with league pass and video editing skills should make a youtube compilation of this week's late-game free throw anti-heroics.

@Adam - Jazz went on a 11-0 run to close out the game after Bryant made all of those shots. Of course it's easy to blame his teammates (especially when Bryant was a stunning 6-17 before going "hero mode"), who weren't expecting to take any shots after that. Gasol, who had been automatic, actually hesitated when he was wide open with a jumper on the next trip down with about 2 minutes to go. Obviously, he missed it because he was not expecting the ball.

There was no movement in the offense, which always happens when Byrant starts chucking it up. Meanwhile, look at the Jazz's run to end the game. Deron Williams ran the offense, Millsap gets a layup, Williams hits a three, Raja Bell gets a layup after they steal the ball from Byrant (because everyone in the building knew who was going to shoot it). Outside of the dish to Artest at the end (which did just rim out), this was a typical Lakers loss.

SPECTRE has LA as an eighth seed in the West. Starting to sound like it. They can pound the bad teams (and the Suns on occasion), but not really measure up against, Denver, San Antonio, Utah, Boston, or Orlando. Soft schedule now, they'll get theirs eventually.

The ignorance displayed by some of these comments make me wonder if some of you people actually watch basketball. Karc, if you're not being sarcastic, I honestly have no idea what to say.

Kobe's "hero mode" lasted a total of FIVE possessions. Those 5 possessions consisted of
1) Made 3
2) Made 3
3) Made 2 on a post up
4) Made 3
5) Fouled on a 3 (made all 3 FTs)

Kobe didn't take a shot for the rest of this game, with ALL the plays in the last 2 minutes being run for Gasol or Artest off of Kobe/Gasol pick and roll action. If you're blaming Gasol bricking a jumper and a 3 footer on "not expecting to take a shot" after being "frozen out" on a mighty 5 possessions, then you need to find another sport to follow because you aren't getting this one.

Anonymous Brian said...
"Tell me again why Westbrook is never in the discussion for great up & coming PGs again?"

This makes me wonder what would have happened if the Heat had taken Westbrook instead of Beasley in the 2008 draft. They would already have the quality PG they desperately need now.

Anonymous Karc said...
@Anonymous - Gasol never touched the ball when Byrant hit those shots. All he did was set screens. That matters. If you go through a three minute sequence where you all do is set screens, it'd be a little surprising to suddenly get the ball and shoot it.

And don't hurt yourself, "ALL" was at most five more shots (two by Artest and two by Gasol) and a turnover by Byrant. The jumper was missed entirely because Gasol was not expecting the ball. The 8-footer and Artest 3 were by running the offense, which was fine, but by then, the damage was done and the Lakers were out of it because they were trailing.

I know I'm not the only who saw that 14-point run and immediately said, "Lakers are losing this game."

@Kark,
Just watched the replay of that Utah-LAL game.
I'm not sure you watched the same game the rest of us watched.
Just to make sure we are talking about the same game, lets get a couple of facts in.

1. Kobe entered the game with 7:35 to go in the 4th quarter.

2. Care to guess how many field goals did the Lakers have before Kobe entered the game?
Answer? ZERO (0)

3. Kobe didn't start "chucking it up" until there were 4 minutes left in the 4th quarter.
That is THREE (3) minutes AFTER he had entered the game.

4. On that same note, at the time Kobe started "Chucking it up" with 4 min left in the 4th quarter, the Lakers had only made ONE (1) field goal in the entire quarter.

5. Bryant went 5-5 during the "chucking it up" period.

6. Below you'll find the final 5 Laker possessions of the game after the "chucking it up" period to were the game was out of reach.

1:47 Pau Gasol misses 21-foot jumper 96-93
1:05 Kobe Bryant bad pass (Deron Williams steals) 96-96
0:52 Ron Artest misses 16-foot two point shot 96-98
0:14 Ron Artest misses 23-foot three point jumper 96-98
96-98
0:05 Pau Gasol misses 8-foot jumper 96-100

The Bryant turnover actually came on an intended pass to a cutting Barnes that hit Deron's foot.
Artest and Barnes bricked wide open jumpers --on Kobe's passes btw-- One of Gasol missed jumpers (he missed two) he received a Bryant pass on the elbow but with 9 seconds on the clock shot, you want to blame that on Bryant? really?

Just like many other Laker fans, I don't want to see Kobe jacking up contested jumpers at the expense of the offense. On the same token, if the offense isn't producing I demand for Bryant to justify those $25 mill he makes a year.
During Bryants long career is perhaps rather easy to point at several games in which his "hero mode" has hurt the team.
Last night however wasn't one of them.

It is fine if you want to mock player for having a bawful night.
But last nights defeat rests on all of the Laker team's shoulders and saying that Bryant "screwed the Lakers last night" is either Recall Bias or straight up TROLLING.
If the former then I advise to re-watch at the very least the 4th quarter of that game. If the latter, then this post probably isn't even worth my time.

@Paul - Never said Kobe going hero mode was BAD, just that when he does, they LOSE.

Also never said that he "screwed" the Lakers, but whenever he does this, the other team pretty much knows how to defend it now (go after him and let his teammates miss shot after shot). That's exactly what Utah did. Utah stuck to their offense, Lakers went away from theirs, and the end result was a Utah win.

Re: "Hero mode:" the point has never been that Kobe was BAD at it: he is, in fact, performing basketball heroics. The point is that the Lakers actually do WORSE when he does that. Does it mean that it must be a horribly frustrating moment for Kobe? Sure. Doesn't change the outcome, though. If the Lakers play a balnced game of basketball, especialy with lots of touches for Gasol, they are the best team in basketball. If Kobe goes into hero mode, they are beatable by the good teams. @Wormboy, Kobe went into "hero mode" because the rest of the team couldn't throw a pea in the ocean after the first quarter. It's a cause and effect issue, and the question is, which comes first, the team going ice cold, or Kobe taking over? Against the Jazz, it was the team going cold. After scoring 33 in the 1st quarter, they scored a total of 39 points in the next two quarters and only made one FG the first seven minutes of the 4th quarter, with Kobe not having taken a shot yet. And it wasn't like the team wasn't running the offense, either. They were getting plenty of wide-open shots and were just missing them. They only had six turnovers in the entire game.

It was obvious that the team needed a spark, so Kobe scored 14 pts in the next five possessions until Utah double-teamed him to get the ball out of his hands, resulting in several wide-open shots for the other Lakers, who just missed again. Kobe going into hero mode is a symptom of the team struggling to score, not the cause. It happens this way about 80% of the time when he ends up taking over.

Kobe goes hero mode again (15 straight points this time), Lakers lose again. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Predictable as that was, I'm more impressed by Roy Hibbert's absolute owning of Pau Gasol, especially towards the end of the game, posting right into him to get Gasol's 5th foul. Then knowing that Gasol is the only thing that closely resembles a "center" on that team, went right to the basket for the game-sealing dunk.

Wouldn't take that loss too hard, LA fans. Your "pseudo" NFL team, the Chargers, absolutely pasted the Colts to balance things out, ending the Colts 12+ win season streak after seven years.

Wow, Karc needed no better argument to back up his claims, than the way the Lakers, or more specifically, Kobe, played last night. I wonder if our resident Laker fans are going to start with the "but the rest of the team played like shit - it's not Kobe's fault!" stuff again. Look, you guys: I respect the Lakers. I respect the shit out of them. I even have more love for Kobe than I had before. Still, the fact is that you can't be successful as a team, if one guy, no matter how good he is, hogs the ball and doesn't trust the other players.
Hell, I'm a pretty decent pick-up baller, and I've been dubbed "the one-man army" by some, but I still prefer to get my teammates involved, no matter what I think about their skills. The reason: I know that nobody is impossible to guard, and nobody can make their shots all of the time. If I go into "Kobe mode" (previously known as "Hero mode"), the odds are that my "go-to moves" (and, as Bawful pointed out - pick-up ballers have a limited repertoire of those) will just make me predictable and easy to defend against, and when you combine that with the rest of the guys not getting any touches, it just messes with their morale and they lose the desire to win. They just want to get it over with, and, preferably, not play with me again. Now, while Kobe does have an amazing array of trick-shots he uses, he still can't win the game on those shots alone, and his teammates have to live with the notion that he might pull the same stuff in the next game, and the next game, and the next game...

Also: PHX-DEN - 271 points in regulation time? It's like Mike D'Antoni never left (and also like Don Nelson infiltrated the coaching staff of the Nuggets).

Anonymous Czernobog said...
Kobe is culpable in the brickfest, sure. But I don't buy the notion that he's the reason Pau went 5-15 or Fish and Brown combining for 4-17. Sometimes guys just have a tough night at the office. And yes, Kobe should probably let them play through it rather than try to pick up the load, but I don't think Kobe jacking up shots is the reason for his team stinking. Rather it's the other way around.

But whatever the reason, the bottom line is: Ha-Haa.

Captcha: rateless. The NBA's televised thanksgiving games were rateless.
