I thought the season hit it's lowest possible point when the Cadavers lost 26 games in a row.

Then, when the Cadavers snapped that streak against the Clippers, I genuinely thought I couldn't possibly witness a worse NBA-related moment. Maybe ever.

I was wrong. God in heaven help me, I was wrong.

bieber

Bonus and totally not made up quote directly from the AP recap: "He has the softest hair," marveled former Los Angeles Laker Rick Fox, who patted his West teammate Bieber on the head during the game.

I know, I know, this is the All Star break, and America needs to reassure itself that Bieber is the worthy centre of its attention, but even so... from an international perspective, this type of rubbish brings the NBA back 10 years every time it happens. Way to dampen the opening to the AS Weekend. I mean, over Pip? COME ON!?!?!?!?!

At least this year it's obvious which event was the worst of the weekend. Last year, there might have been some debate whether the horse competition or dunk contest were more deserving...
Giving the celebrity game mvp to an undeserving participant must be a tradition. Last year's winner was Rapaport, even though Common actually played a good game.
By the way, was there ever one of these games where the wnba players didn't play like they were at the half-way point of a lazy 9-month offseason?

Well that dunk contest kicked ass. I wasn't too optimistic because last year's was so fricking terrible I had begun to lose faith in the event altogether. A bunch of half-assed performances by seemingly disinterested contestants. But wow, I thought this year's definitely lived up to the hype. Blake was great as expected, Mcgee was great (I never knew this guy was so talented), Ibaka was great (probably got shafted on that foul line dunk because no way was that just a 45), and DeRosen was great.

I think Westbrook's girl did too!

I found it to be very...pure in an evening that is sort of overall kind of a slog to get through at times.

The dunk contest was a bit anticlimatic, but was much better than the last few years. That first round of dunks were eye opening.

Anonymous Mladen said...
Maybe it's just me (and yeah, I didn't get to watch the dunk contest in it's entirety, only the highlights), but it seems to me that Griffin wasn't very original, and relied more on showmanship and flare (with the choir and the car), than on the actual dunk being something amazing or new. McGee was a pleasant surprise, and I can't believe that his dunks were judged worse than Griffin's. And yeah - Ibaka killed it from the free throw line. What gives? I might seriously stop caring about and watching that piece of crap "contest".

Anonymous Anonymous said...
You people must be pretty dumb.

First off, if 'this shit' set the NBA back ten years every time it happens, the game would've uninvented itself.

Second, this is the celebrity all star game. It's not the "Let's make Scottie Pippen feel good for blocking a tiny kid" game. By which I mean: this game is about promoting the NBA to people who aren't like us. Scottie Pippen isn't going to get news like Bieber, and that's what this is about.

And last, who gives a shit? Kid was good enough to play alright with some much taller dudes.

Anonymous DJ Leon Smith said...
Anon: The first ever actual free throw dunk? Jordan dunked from the free throw line before 1988 (his most famous FTL dunk where he stepped on the line but cocked the ball back behind his head). Check his dunk from the 1985 dunk comp.

About the dunk contest, it was great, better than expected. And here's my breakdown:

Scoring for Griffin's side I think it should have been a tiebreak between Griffin and Derozan on the first round, because the first dunk of Derozan was not really a 44, it was worth a 48. The first attemtps of Griffin, if made, would have been worth 50 points, though.

Ibaka did his best but the others are really sick leapers, I was watching the show here in Spain and the commentators couldn't stop saying that Ibaka deserved more and Ibaka was the best and stupid things that showed they had never made a dunk even in a garbage can.
Griffin's first round dunks were monster dunks although they weren't what he exactly did in his first tries, Derozan dunks were unreal, very difficult, and McGee's dunks were completely new and challenging, too. Ibaka only had a chance if the others were below their level.

Anyway, in the final round, Griffin was the fair winner, both dunks were unbeliavable. The first dunk is actually dangerous, it's not only a vertical leap, he's also jumping sideways to catch the ball off the backboard and throw it down to his elbow, a no-brainer 50. The 2nd one is a great dunk too, Marko Milic jumped over a car over its middle section, okay, but it was a convertible, he already had the ball in his hand, and he took a longer running start. Griffin actually had to catch the pass thrown from the car and he dunked it with both hands.
About McGee, his first dunk was great, but I didn't like how he gave up after Griffin's parade. I think he knew he was going to lose because the winner was determined by online voting, but he was doing a deserving and original contest and his last dunk was like Darrell Armstrong's layup.

That's it.

I also have to say that the online voting screwed up the not-NBA dunk contest, stealing the prize from T-Dub in favor of Young Hollywood (because he's from LA).

And the three-point shootout was disappointing, I save Allen and Jones, and Pierce in the final round, but what a piece of shit we were given. It'd have been better a shootout between Steve Kerr and Kenny Smith from mid-court.

@Adri+

from what I understand McGee was going to do something similar to Ibaka's stuffed animal dunk, and didn't have any back-up plans. I still think McGee was robbed though, Griffin's dunks were impressive - they all were, to an extent - but McGee actually put some thought into his dunks. which is rare these days.

also, he made Dwight Howard jealous.

Anonymous Cristi said...
Go to espn.com. Why, you ask? Well because there's little ad on there about a car. Is it the new KIA Optima, the car over which Blake Griffin jumped? Could be. Was the dunk contest just one big car commercial? Sure looks like it. Could Blake Griffin have won even if he jumped over a pile of shit from someone who ate Taco Bell? We could find out next year.

Blogger Interstate08 said...
Yea I read that McGee had planned for his finale to put a piece of paper in the net and pull it out with his teeth but it was obviously too similar to Ibaka's. It was really disappointing to see him just kind of give up in the end there because he had done so great up to that point.

Also I thought it was interesting that Dr. J kissed Mcgee's mom on the lips when she was schmoozing with the judge's panel. The crowd roared with shock when that happened. lol I thought Mcgee was gonna yell "get off my momma!"

Anonymous AdriĆ  said...
@Torgo

It's a pity that McGee didn't already had a B plan, he couldn't win with a dunk like the last one. One more dunk in the same line and now I would find myself saying that he had to be the winner.

I think that the "steal" fits better with Derozan by the reasons explained above.

Would the organization bring a car to the arena and a gospel choir to not use them?

I thought it was obvious the dunk contests are at least a little planned. Like they would let Dwight not do to the superman thing, or Nate jump over him, or this year let product placement go to waste.

ASG prediction: LeBron is gonna jack up a lot of shots thinking that'll get him MVP like always.

It's taken me about 6 months (or from whenever the "decision" was) but for the first time in that span I wasn't hating Lebron and wishing for him to play horribly tonight. I didn't cringe every time they interviewed or showed him in a commercial. I finally got passed the superdickery! He played well tonight, but I was happy Kobe got the MVP, tying Bob Pettit for the all-time record.

Not to be a dick but was Bob Pettit actually any good or was he just a decent white guy playing against other bad white guys in the 50's?

I am now going to exhibit self-control and restrain myself from making a Stevie Wonder comment.

I don't really watch sports other than the NBA, but does anyone else know if they do interviews with people (especially with fans) during the game with any other sports, or is this strictly an NBA thing? I can't tell you how much I hate it when they shrink the screen with the game on down and split screen it so we can see the person they're interviewing, and I also hate it even if they're showing the game on full screen but we're listening to an interview that has nothing to do with what we're seeing. Do they ever do this with any other sport?

Wild Yams:

The splitted screen is something I see in Spain with motorbikes and F1 races, but the action is long enough not to lose relevant things, if something's going on they don't screw it up with that. In basketball they sometimes interview a coach but they wait to do it at the end of a period. They like to import the American example, though, so I expect it will be done even more :S

DJ Leon.....Jordan stole the free throw line dunk from Dr J who used to do it in the ABA 10-15 years earlier.

Interstate....Bob Petttit scored 50 points in leading the Hawks past the seemingly invincible Celtics which included Sam Jones and Bill Russell to win the NBA Finals. He could average 25 points and 10 rebounds NOW.

It drives me nuts when people dismiss the 50's and 60's like the guys don't compare to now. Most kids today think a blocked shot is when someone swats the ball 100 feet out of bounds and beats their chest. Meanwhile Bill Russell's shot blocks were when he deflected the ball to a teammate then races up court to complete the fast break. You tell me which of those is more productive than the other.

Also, if players are "so much better" now...how come no one ever uses the skyhook that made Kareem Abdul Jabbar famous? How come no one can shoot from half court like Pete Maravich? How come no one passes like Bob Cousy or Magic Johnson?

Somewhere in the last few decades fundamentals were replaced by street ball. Maybe that's why Ray Allen will probably never be topped in the 3 point shot because no one bothers to practice (see Allen Iverson) fundamentals other than a select few.

Interstate08: Doing era comparisons that far back is always hard. Superficially he looks like a white stiff who'd be a 12th man nowadays, but then again if Dirk, Nash, or Bird played back then in grainy black and white they'd look like they couldn't play nowadays either. Or maybe basketball really has progressed so much that even a guy like Scola would be the GOAT in the '50s. Or maybe he'd still be pretty good, but he just wouldn't stand out as much. Impossible to know.

Just because you watched Justin Bieber play basketball, doesn't make you an expert in basketball. What part of Bieber's performance was MVP worthy? For that matter do you even know what MVP stands for? I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say you don't.

Blogger Interstate08 said...
I agree stephanie I guess it's tough to make comparisons then between the two vastly different eras. I just get annoyed when seeing statistical leaderboards these days, and many times even the best superstars of our time cannot compete with some of the insurmountable numbers of the past. For instance Wilt Chamberlain averaging over 50 points per game in a season... etc... just seems kind of stupid

Khayes sorry but I still believe the 12th man on most NBA rosters these days can go back and spank most of those 50's and 60's guys, even with their "devastating sky-hooks" and intimidating overhead set shots, but we'll have to agree to disagree since obviously it can never be resolved. I've watched old footage though, it was mostly bawful...

These fuckers are not good at basketball. I'm talking all-stars like Hal Greer, Sam Jones, and Billy Cunningham are painfully bad to watch. Wilt is not into the game mentally from what I'm seeing. Make all the arguments you want, I could take a scrub from today's NBA and he would shit on these guys. They were great in their time and nothing more.

Kazam, you compare an entire era based on a single game that featured half the Celtics passed their prime and the one year Wilt thought about anyone but himself? (he led the league in assists that year I believe). I still remember the 2002 playoff game between the Celtics and the Pistons that ended 66-64, am I going to judge that era based on that game? I grew up watching the same basketball you did and to me watching the 1998 Vancouver Grizzlies was a lot more bawful than watching Hall of Famers such as Greer, Cunningham, Jones, Howell, Russell, KC Jones, Chamberlain, Havlicek and Embry.

Interstate, you had to be DAMN good to crack the NBA with only a certain number of teams back in the day. Think of if the NBA contracted 18 teams and had to redistribute the talent, there still would be all-stars jobless.

Also Red Auerbach's teams were in such peak physical condition that they'd probably run every modern team off the court now. You think Lebron James, Kobe Bryant or anyone besides Jason Kidd (who played the fast break with the Nets) would be able to literally sprint back and forth for 48 minutes AND contend with the greatest shot blocker the game has ever seen?
